The Tempest is based around a key a idea of reuniting family through what may appear to the characters as bizarre coincidence, but in fact is the outcome of witchcraft/magic Essay Example Essay Example

The Tempest is based around a key a thought of rejoining family through what may appear to the characters as peculiar fortuitous event, however in certainty is the result of black magic/enchantment Essay Example Paper The Tempest is based around a key a thought of rejoining family through what may appear to the characters as unusual happenstance, yet in reality is the result of black magic/enchantment Essay Introduction Shakespeare’s, â€Å"The Tempest† is based around a key a thought of rejoining family through what may appear to the characters as unusual happenstance, however in actuality is the result of black magic/enchantment. It is broadly thought the principle character (Prospero) is a change of the celebrated essayist himself, William Shakespeare, as Prospero seeks after his examinations over his kin and furthermore is exceptionally enamored with his little girl. We are first acquainted with Prospero in Act I Scene II where we see his little girl Miranda interrogating him regarding the wreck, here Shakespeare utilizes discussion as an instrument to develop our early introductions of Prospero and to clarify his past. My early introduction is that he is very conceited as he attempts to depict himself as an extraordinary character and good example to Miranda similar to every one of his activities are for her advantage, â€Å"No hurt. I have sat idle yet in care of thee,† The Tempest is based around a key a thought of rejoining family through what may appear to the characters as odd occurrence, however in certainty is the result of black magic/enchantment Essay Body Paragraphs This could likewise be deciphered as the job of a caring dad however then Prospero proceeds to educate her concerning her past which he has kept from her for a long time, is this so cherishing? Prospero may well have been endeavoring to secure his girl, or it might appear to the crowd that he was deliberately denying data of her fair to guarantee that his arrangement proceeded likewise. He likewise discusses how he was unreasonably ousted from his renowned situation as Duke of Milan, however yet Antonio isn't here to shield himself so as a group of people we may stop to address whether this view is completely evident as he attempts to excuse the way that he was increasingly worried about his examinations. He frantically attempts to keep up a significant level of regard from Miranda, â€Å"Thou attend’st not? O, great sir, I do.† This gives me the feeling that he is regarded by power, excited by the way that he has such position, accidentally depicting himself as tyranni cal. All through the play we can see the duality in Prospero’s character. Shakespeare gives us two particular sides to Prospero, one being the despot and the other being the defender. In the event that we take a gander at him as the dictator we can right off the bat take a gander at the fundamental explanation of the play; the wreck. Despite the fact that Prospero didn’t hurt anybody installed the boat, he despite everything caused the wreck, from the outset apparently this is a maltreatment of his capacity, yet what strikes me more than anything is that it was really Ariel who caused the tempest yet Prospero doesn’t uncover this to Miranda and even takes care of her before calling Ariel. (This again could be viewed as the job of an ensuring father.) A key actualize in Prospero’s take a stab at power is his shroud, when wearing it he is in finished control and afterward once evacuated he comes back to being the caring dad. Shakespeare takes care to guaran tee that the components of his caring dad side are as yet obvious, for example at the point when he tells Miranda of how her grin assisted with supporting him through the excursion from Milan to the island, â€Å"Thou wast that preserved me. Thou didst grin, Infused with a mettle from heaven,† The greatest discussion, as I would see it, is whether Prospero caused Miranda and Ferdinand to experience passionate feelings for or whether it was regular. We can take a gander at it from both the dictator and the defender side. Apparently Prospero has set everything up down to the absolute last detail to ensure that his arrangement will work and henceforth Miranda and Ferdinand will marry.but does that imply that he made them experience passionate feelings for? Indeed and no, you could contend yes in such a case that it weren’t for his plotting they could never have met in any case, yet no as in he professed to be against the thought in order to test that Ferdinand’s lo ve was genuine. All through the play there is a proceeding with sense that Prospero resembles a divine being. He is in charge of his space, has caused everything that has happened to occur, and has control over each circumstance. He is inescapable as in he sends Ariel to oversee everything that’s going on and to prod and for the most part cause destruction, Ariel then reports back to Prospero with the goal that he is stayed up with the latest and can start to plot his next strategy. Once more, here Shakespeare appears to incite an oppressive picture of Prospero and this likewise features his treatment of Ariel. Whenever Ariel gets some information about when he will at long last be discharged, Prospero helps him to remember the deceptive life he saved him from. As perusers we can see this is very dishonest as Prospero protected Ariel from one existence of servitude and dove him straight into another, â€Å"Dost thou overlook From what torment I did free thee?† Prospero ’s treatment of Ariel changes as one moment he’s alluding to him as â€Å"malignant thing† and afterward the following, â€Å"My curious Ariel,† so again Prospero could be seen as being conflicting. In Act II Scene I the possibility of Prospero as a divine being is additionally advanced, when he tests Sebastian and Antonio through Ariel by furnishing them with the opportunity to slaughter Alonso and Gonzalo, here we see Shakespeare utilizing comparable enticement as in Macbeth. When Prospero orders Ariel to stir the casualties Shakespeare helps the state of mind by placing in a clever melody, written in rhyme. In spite of the fact that it might give the idea that Sebastian and Antonio are in charge, we as the crowd realize that Prospero is the genuine power behind everything, testing them partially and afterward halting. On the off chance that we look now to Prospero’s treatment of Caliban, we see that despite the fact that he is in a similar situa tion as Ariel, Caliban responds diversely to his circumstance. Caliban accepts that each awful thing that transpires is down to Prospero. As a group of people we can legitimize that Prospero is in truth honest concerning the squeezing, frightening, irritating, misdirecting, gabbing, gnawing and murmuring, and we may start to perceive how Shakespeare utilizes Caliban to give us that Prospero isn’t to accuse constantly. We additionally start to comprehend why Prospero alludes to him in such a discourteous way, for example â€Å"freckled whelp†, â€Å"lying slave†, and â€Å"filth†. In Act III Scene II we are again demonstrated how diversely the two animals respond to their treatment when Caliban tells Trinculo and Stephano that Prospero took the island from his ownership, â€Å"As I told thee previously, I am dependent upon a dictator, an alchemist, that by his cleverness hath duped me of the island.† Ariel, albeit again undetectable, reacts in restr iction with â€Å"Thou liest.† This, from the perspective on the crowd, again strengthens our observation that Prospero might be adoring after all as Ariel tends to misrepresent just as Caliban yet he bolsters Prospero on this record. Another supernatural quality of Prospero is his propensity to test individuals, we consistently observe him do this all through the play and one of the most significant occasions we see this, when Shakespeare has him situated over the scene in full perspective on the crowd is in Act III Scene III when he orders the spirits to enter with a dinner and afterward when they way to deal with feast Ariel stops them with a discourse, rather like a lesson, instructing as opposed to rebuffing, summarizing the play with, â€Å"You fools! I and my colleagues Are priests of Fate† Here Shakespeare forces the possibility of paradise and damnation by having Ariel dressed as a Harpy (animal of hellfire) and the great and terrible separation with the god l ooking out for. Yet, sometimes it might be seen that Prospero is really and shrewdness god as he is prodding them with food. Despite the fact that Alonso thinks he has been rebuffed for forsaking Prospero in his hour of need, we as the crowd realize that he hasn’t genuinely been rebuffed however in certainty that his child is alive thus here we may understand that Prospero isn’t truly out for vengeance. This scene shows us Prospero in charge, as a performer, and furthermore as an exceptional figure. The language Shakespeare decides to use in Ariel’s discourse is extremely solid, the utilization of â€Å"you† may even cause individuals from the crowd to feel as if he is conversing with them. This play has a proceeding with topic of conclusion, for example the unfastening of bunches, and this is the structure of all of Shakespeare’s plays. In Act IV Scene I we see both the dictator and the caring dad side as Prospero addresses Ferdinand on the matter of sex before marriage, despite the fact that he is as yet being formal and here and there very forceful it is because of his affection for Miranda, by giving her over to marriage with Ferdinand Prospero portrays the procedure as parting with, â€Å"A third of mine own life† And consequently Shakespeare empowers individuals from the crowd to identify with Prospero. Simultaneously individuals may consider this to be his possessive nature, treating Miranda like his property, and very high and mighty yet we should recall this is the thing that father’s did in that period. All through Act IV the picture of Prospero as a dramatist/chief is developed progressively, he clarifies that the playing around are over now, it was much the same as a round of chess to him with the King being cornered. In line 184, Prospero again is very conflicting when he calls Ariel, â€Å"my bird† as the â€Å"my† could either be taken as possessive again or friendly yet then flying creatures are firmly connected with opportunity yet in addition imprisonment. When Prospero enters in enchantment robes in Act V Scene I, he is conveying a staff which obviously is

One way our culture has tried to make life a little easier is by implementing a function now know as â€Å"McDonaldization†. McDonaldization is defined as â€Å"the process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world. We will write a custom essay sample on The Four basic Factors of McDonaldization or any similar topic only for you Order Now † (1) The success of McDonalds, and of McDonaldization as a whole, is due to four basic factors–efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. One of the first functions of McDonaldization is efficiency. Efficiency means choosing the optimum means to an given end. In our society, people like to have things go as quickly and as smoothly as possible, but they do not want to find out the fastest way themselves. Instead, people like to have a system that has already been used and that they know works. Efficiency has its advantages for both consumers, who get what they want quickly and with little effort, and for workers, who can perform their tasks in a simple manner. The fast food industry is very streamlined, because hamburgers are the simplest ood there is to make. Other foods also do not need a lot of ingredients, and they are simple to make and to eat. Most of the food is also prepared so one can eat it with their hands, thereby reducing the need for utensils. In the process of McDonaldization, consumers are forced to do a good deal of work as well. They have to stand on line, carry their own food, and throw out the garbage. This is not as efficient for the consumer, but it saves time for the workers. Education, health care, and the work place are all becoming McDonaldalized in order to become more efficient. Efficiency in McDonaldization has streamlined many processes, simplified goods and services, and forces the consumer to do work as well. Another factor of McDonaldization is calculability. This tends to put more of an emphasis on quantity rather than quality, but it allows the consumer to get a lot of food quickly. When things are easily counted, it facilitates the process by making it more predictable by using the same amount of materials. Part of McDonalds is an emphasis on size. Everything is â€Å"super sized,† or have names that make food items seem larger than they actually are. Calculability, however, also leads to the quality of the food being neglected. Because people feel as if they are getting a lot of food for their money, they are not as worried about how good it tastes. Food is always weighed and measured precisely, which is another part of calculability. All burgers weigh the same amount, there are the same number of fries in each container, and the new drink machines dispense the same amount to each cup. This same theory is seen in our education system. Students are herded through, and no one really pays much attention to what or how they are earning, just that they receive high grades so they can get into a good college. Health care has also seen the impact of these, because now patients are mainly treated just to squeeze some money out of them, and doctors seemingly don’t truly care about their patients anymore. Calculability basically reduces the quality of goods, but improves the The third function of McDonaldization is predictability. In our society, people usually want to know exactly what to expect from a given situation. Predictability gives the consumer a break from having to make difficult decisions, and the worker can perform heir task with little effort. The needs of everyone become easily anticipated. One of the first places predictability became common was with motel chains. Before motels became franchised, guests didn’t know exactly what they would be getting, for the good or the bad. But then hotels such as Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson’s started, and guests knew exactly what they were going to get when they stayed there. This new practice was copied in the food industry, namely by McDonalds. First, they started with a large and noticeable sign, that could be easily recognized. People from around the world now know he McDonalds symbol is a giant yellow â€Å"M†. Something else that is predictable is the way employees are forced to interact with customers. Employees have a set script that they must follow, and this gives them some control over their customers. Their work is also done in the same manner, for example, the hamburgers all must be cooked the exact same way for the same amount of time. They also must dress and act in a certain way. Customers themselves behave predictably in fast food restaurants, as they get their food, carry it to their table, eat, clean their trash, and leave. Now everyone knows this is the ay one must act in a fast food restaurant. The food itself is predictable as well, and there are not many choices in fast food restaurants. It is basically the same from food chain to food chain. Predictability is also found in other institutions, such as in education. Professors usually stand in the front of the class, near a blackboard while they lecture. Most colleges offer the same type of classes, and even testing is similar, if multiple choice tests are used. Health care as well is based on a series of rules, regulations and controls that restrict the physicians and keep their behavior controlled. Malls, home cooking, housing, and vacations are all getting very predictable as well. Predictability is achieved in a number of ways, mainly by the replication of settings, the use of scripts and a routine way of acting, as well as a routine product. The final dimension of McDonaldization is increased control. Recently, new technologies have been developed in order to control the actions of the people. You read "The Four basic Factors of McDonaldization" in category "Essay examples" Robots and computers are both easier to deal with and to manage than people. Organizations hope to gain control over people by using and developing new and more effective technologies. One people are controlled, their behavior is easily manageable and machinelike, and when that happens, people can then be replaced by robots. Fast food restaurants do not have cooks, because that would mean they were forced to rely on one person. Instead, their is a simple process that anyone can be trained to do, and following certain steps leads to the same product. McDonalds already as a number of new technologies which reduces the need for actual people to work. There is a soft drink dispenser that shuts itself off automatically, a french fry machine that can cook the fries tself, and a cash register with the prices preset. Robots have a number of advantages over people, because they cost less, increase efficiency, need fewer workers, and they are never absent. Customers are controlled by the management as well. People know exactly what they must do in a drive through window, and also what to do inside the restaurant. Management discourages people from staying in the restaurant for very long, so that there is more room for other customers. The food is designed to be eaten quickly, and with little mess. In most food industries, technologies where humans basic role is only to plan nd maintain the system is becoming dominant, and replacing the processes where people must be skilled in order to work. Education is McDonaldized as well, because professors must follow a set curriculum, and class periods must conform to a certain length. Health care is controlled by various rules and bureaucracies, which are designed to control both the patient and the doctors. Advertising is used now at a more personal level, and tries to control the minds of the people into thinking a certain way. The main objective of control is the reduce the uncertainties of a business, and technology tries to control work related rocesses, as well as the finished product. McDonaldization is found all around us, even at Hofstra University. One aspect of university life which has become greatly McDonaldized is the registration process. At Hofstra, students must choose their own classes from a given list, and then meet with their advisor to approve it. They then have to take their registration card to Memorial Hall, where they take a number, and wait for their turn to be called. Only then can your For the first factor of McDonaldization, efficiency, the registration process is definitely not up to par. When students first get to Memorial, they are forced to take a number, like at a deli counter. They then must wait. And wait. And wait, just for their number to be called. Students are forced to wait for sometimes as long as three or four hours to make a schedule. Although it is better than a random free for all, with everyone scrambling around at the same time, there is still much that can be done to improve it. At some parts of the day, there are as few as three windows open, with more than one hundred students waiting. This process can hardly be called efficient, when some other niversities have phone or electronic registration, which can be completed in a few Calculability is also seen during the registration process. The main idea is to try to complete as many schedules in the shortest amount of time. However, this causes students to not receive any individualized attention, and they are forced to make their schedules on their own with little guidance. This is because the main interest is on quantity, rather than the quality of the schedules. In fact, the school prefers to have the lack of guidance, because it causes students to take unnecessary credits, and they then ust spend more time in school, while paying even more money. This system is fairly predictable, although not in a good way. During registration time, students know that they will have to spend many hours just waiting in line with nothing to do. They also can predict there will not be any seats left, that half of the windows will be closed by lunch time, and that it will always be about a million degrees in the waiting area. Students also are used to the gray schedule booklets, as well as the yellow registration cards. Seeing either of those items leads the students to think about xactly what they must go through, in order to register successfully. The final element, control, is seen as well. Students are being controlled by a tiny little slip of paper they hold in their hand, which has a simple number on it. That number signifies their place on line, but it was generated by a computer, which keeps track of how many people are waiting. Students also rely on the kiosk system, which shows which classes are still open, and which have been closed out. These factors help keep registration as a controlled process. McDonaldization is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s changing world. However, it allows us to expect certain things, helps us to manage our time better, and make life in general a little bit simpler. It also, however, cuts down on the individuals of our society, and forces them to conform to a set standard, which is considered the norm. Some places are able to use McDonaldization effectively, while others are still struggling to implement it in a way which makes it work. It is a complicated process, which requires a good deal of thinking and brainstorming to manage successfully. All in all, McDonaldization has both positive and negative impacts on our world. Haha Essay Home Page | Submit an Essay | Links Description of this essay : Compares java and C++DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JAVA AND C++ 1 INTRODUCTION Since its release in 1995, Java has been hyped in many places, including computer magazines, broadcast news, and the Internet, as the solution to all problems in the application development community. As it has only been around for approximately 4 years now, it is still emerging into the programming language market. The main area where Java has had a large impact had been on the Internet. It is widely maintained that Java is definitely the best tool so far for writing Internet applets. (http://www.relisoft.com/java/c_java.html) Testimony to this statement are the numerous sites on the WWW that currently use java applets. Apart from being able to create cute Internet applets, as yet Java has struggled to break into the area of application development. When compared to a language such as C++, java has some large advantages but also some disadvantages. In this paper I plan to discuss the differences between these languages and the merits of each. 2 ADVANTAGES OF JAVA One of the attractions of Java as a programming language is that is is a purely object oriented language. This allows programmers to design reusable components easily, which can reduce development time. You can churn out Java four or five times faster than C++ (http://www.mcmillan.com/JavaVs.htm) Another factor that can help reduce development time is its relatively simple syntax. Its very similar to C++, making it very easy for an experienced C++ programmer to learn Java. Also its automatic memory management, which includes a garbage collector, negates the need to keep track of pointers or delete objects. This makes it much simpler to write and understand than C++. Another advantage Java has over other languages is its portability. When a Java program is compiled, it is not compiled into native machine code, instead it is compiled into byte code which can be interpreted by a Java Virtual Machine running on the host computer. Once a specific computer architecture has a Virtual Machine designed for it, the computer can execute any Java program that has been compiled into byte code. This portability becomes evident in web based applications. Web developers can write applications in Java, compile them once, and run them on any machine that has a Java compatible web browser. Although Javas portability gives it a clear advantage over other languages, this feature also creates one of Javas biggest disadvantages. Although Javas ability for producing portable, architecturally neutral code is desirable, the method used to create this code is inefficient. Unlike natively compiled code, an interpreter must first translate the Java binary code into the equivalent microprocessor instruction. Obviously, this translation takes some amount of time and, no matter how small a length of time this is, it is slower than performing the same operation in machine code. On occasions where it is desirable for code to be as efficient as possible, Javas automatic memory management may not be the best option. In languages such as C++ where memory management is done explicitly, it may be possible to speed up a program by altering the memory allocation and deletion, but this ability is taken away from us in Java. 4.1 Theoretical Differences 4.1.1 Speed Differences The difference in speed between C++ and Java is very important. Even with all of Javas benefits, Java will not be widely excepted if it can not perform adequately. C++ has been widely adopted by developers and they will not be willing to change languages if the applications they develop with Java do not measure up to their personal and their clients standards. However, if the speed difference is negligible, developers may be willing to learn and program in Java because of the significant advantages the language offers. The introduction of just-in-time compilers for Java may have addressed some of these problems. Just-in-time compilers have brought Java performance virtually neck-and-neck with C++ (http://www.ncworldmag.com/ncworld/ncw-01-1998/ncw-01-jperf.html). 1. In Java, everything is a class. There are no stand-alone functions. Even main() is a member function! 2. In Java, everything is a reference, so the programmer must make sure that memory is allocated properly (using new!), but does not .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 , .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .postImageUrl , .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 , .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:hover , .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:visited , .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:active { border:0!important; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:active , .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84 .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u57ae3889adfa7735910e2a8426160d84:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Public Enemy Sample Essay

Abortion Is Not Bad Essays - Fertility, RTT, Human Reproduction

Abortion Is Not Bad Abortion is not bad, rather it is your logic and argumentation that is lacking in ability and understanding. First, you argue that the presence of a beating heart alone necessarily qualifies a fetus as being a living human being that is entitles to a right to life. While on its face this argument may initially appear compelling, it is profoundly lacking in scientific substantiation. A fetus during the first trimester of development may have a small impulse that resembles a heart beat, but it completely lacks both a brain and a central nervous system. In fact, a spider or a fly is much more developed (and has the capacity to feel more pain) than a fetus early on in the second trimester of a pregnancy. Any person who occasionally squashes an insect or eats meat is causing much more pain to living beings than a woman who chooses to terminate her pregnancy. If the presence of a heart-beat is the relevant issue concerning early abortion, then we would surely be hypocritical to continue to kill animals (like cows, pigs, and chickens) who have hearts that are much more developed than that of a young fetus. Without a brain or a nervous system, a fetus is little more than a lump of cells that cannot yet function together. Indeed, a fetus is little more than an individual egg or even an individual spermwhile there is certainly the potential for life, life has not yet developedthoughts cannot occur, pain cannot be feltFrom a purely biological standpoint, your argument is unfounded. A beating heart is something that all mammalian fetuses develop as they grow within their mothers womb. However, a beating heart does not qualify a fetus as being an independent living creature whose existence takes precedence over the physical and emotional health of the women (in whose womb it temporarily resides). To give the mere preservation of a fetus precedence over the physical and emotional health of the woman is both narrow minded and cruel. To deny a woman the right to terminate her pregnancy is akin to robbing her of any ability to make decisions about her body, her self, and her future. The woman is effectively forced, against her will, to assume an identity and a future that she normally would have avoided. This type of coersion can permanently damage a persons emotional and psychological health. The one thing that makes each of us an individual is our decision making freedom and powers regarding our own future and actions. But when we are robbed of our ability to make our own decisions about our future, our self, and our identity, then we are robbed of our most essential and valuable treasureour self. If a woman wishes to obtain an early term abortionto terminate a pregnancythen she must be allowed to choose this option. If she id denied an abortion, then both her and the future child will suffer tremendously. Please stop viewing abortion as something that you should have sole control over. A persons body is their own, not yours. It is threatening and invasive when others attempt to direct the lives of their peers. Rather supporting the tyrannical idea of forced childbirth, perhaps you ought to consider the more moderate concept that all people should be able to choose the future of their bodies and reproductive functions. I advocate neither abortion nor childbirth, rather I simply defend the right of a woman to chooseto make her own decision about her body and her future. Sex, birth control, pregnancy, abortion, and childbirth are all sensitive and complex issues. One must see people dealing with such dilemmas as being human beings that are confronted with life-changing decisions and experiences. To write pregnancy off as a single option state, is to completely ignore the individual reproductive burden of the womanand to classify childbirth as a duty rather than a life decision. Unfortunately, this approach makes women slaves to their own sexuality and reproductive functions. I ask men to imagine their lives being shattered by the realization that, during the next nine months, they were going to almost double in size, face extremely exaggerated health risks and possible death, be compelled to

The eNotes Blog What the $$$$ Just Happened to My StudentLoans!!

What the $$$$ Just Happened to My StudentLoans!! Paying for college is tough enough, but have you heard about the recent hikes in interest rates for student loans? Read on to find out how this affects you as either a current student or someone in repayment, plus how government officials plan to resolve the issue of crippling student debt. As of yesterday, Stafford Loan interest rates doubled from 3.4% to 6.8%. Congress did not pass an alternative measure before the July 4th break, which will end at 2:00pm on Monday, July 8th. However, it still has the option to pass a measure that will retroactively affect the rise in interest rates, altering the Stafford Loan rates for this year’s students and perhaps others. This article will outline a few of the options Congress faces, what changes may be made, and how those changes might affect students with Stafford Loans. Protestors advocate against increased interest rates. What is a Stafford Loan and how does it work? Stafford Loans are the most common kind of federal student loans available. They are available to students at accredited institutions in the United States, a category to which most colleges and universities in the United States pertain. Stafford Loans can be either subsidized or unsubsidized. Of these, subsidized loans tend to have lower interest rates, and the federal government pays the interest that the loans accrue. Contrastingly, the interest that accumulates on unsubsidized Stafford Loans is capitalized, meaning that it is added to the part of the loan on which interest is paid. Subsidized Stafford Loans are available to those who demonstrate financial need via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which must be renewed each year a student wishes to apply. Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are available to all students who meet the Stafford Loan requirements, which can be found here. In addition to Stafford Loans, the government gives out PLUS Loans, which are unsubsidized loans and in the past have had higher interest rates than Stafford Loans. PLUS Loans are available to graduate students and parents of students. The Option Proposed by President Obama: President Obama proposed an option, named Pay As You Earn, which would tie the interest rates of student loans to those of the market, using ten-year Treasury Note interest rates as a benchmark. Subsidized Stafford Loans would have interest rates 0.93% above those of Treasury Notes, while unsubsidized loans and loans given to graduate students and parents would have rates 2.93% and 3.93% higher, respectively. The president’s proposed option would also cap monthly student payments at ten percent of their monthly income, and it would retire any student debt after it has been held for twenty years. While this option could be beneficial to many, it also carries with it a serious downfall: according to the New York Times, Treasury Note rates have been known to go as high as 8 or 9 percent, and if this were to happen again, it could lead to incredibly high student interest rates. Moreover, Obama’s plan would only apply to Stafford Loans taken during or after 2011. Finally, the plan’s use of fixed interest rates could leave students paying very high rates if they attend school during times of economic success. Senator Elizabeth Warren’s Plan: Student debt represents a serious economic issue. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, proposed a plan that would provide students with the same interest rates as those given to large banks when borrowing from the Federal Reserve (currently 0.75 percent). Warren voiced that the federal government is going to charge students interest rates that are nine times higher than the rates for the biggest banks the same banks that destroyed millions of jobs and nearly broke this economy (US News). But while Warren’s case may make sense at face value, it does not account for an important fact: banks are only given such low interest rates on very short-term loans, which are often paid back overnight. US News notes, â€Å"Even the U.S. government, the epitome of a trustworthy borrower, is paying around 1.8 percent in interest on its 10-year loans now, and nearly 3 percent on its 30-year loans.† Clearly, it doesn’t make economic sense to provide such drastically low interest rates to students when federal student loan default rates for borrowers are as high as they currently are (read more here). However, while Warren’s plan would cost the government a sizable amount of money, it is only a year long, with its intended purpose being to provide Congress with more time to find an alternative solution to raising student interest rates. Allow Interest Rates to Increase as Planned: Consumer advocate Stef Gray explains the effects of increased interest rates for students: â€Å"Ultimately what this is going to mean for students is that they’re going to pay – given a typical ten year repayment plan – four thousand dollars more. That’s an increase of a thousand dollars per year in college, and I think the average student could use an extra thousand dollars in his or her pocket.† She also highlights the fact that â€Å"the federal government currently makes thirty-six cents on every dollar that students borrow,† relating this to last years $51 billion ‘profit,’ which she points out is larger than the profits of any Fortune 500 company. But the federal government, says Dylan Matthews of the Washington Post, does not actually profit from student loans. In fact, â€Å"they actually lose money.† According to Matthews, this is because the government places â€Å"student loans below the market rate.† Why does this happen? Because the Congressional Budget Office, which is in charge of determining the cost of government loans, is required by law to use a method that â€Å"discounts all government loans using the returns on Treasuries of similar maturity.† Which is economist talk for having too much faith in students’ ability to pay back their loans, since Treasuries are far more reliable than student loans. Why does it look like the government is making money off of students? The method accounts for the higher returns that student loans give the government, but it does not factor in the default rates. In other words, it misses a key piece of information: the number of people that probably will n ot pay the government back. Ultimately, the argument cannot be made that the government is trying to make money off of students by raising interest rates on Stafford Loans because the government’s methods make this impossible. It can be argued, however, that increasing interest rates will also increase the default rates on student loans. What does this all boil down to? According to CBS News Analyst Mellody Hobson, certain social effects that carry deep economic implications have historically accompanied increases in student debt. To name a few, people start families later, home ownership goes down, and investment in new businesses drops, all of which lead to a slower economy. Because of this, the money that the government loses when lowering interest rates could be seen as an investment in the economy. This could be particularly important for congressional officers to keep in mind given the competition between domestic and foreign workers for job positions. If the government does not lower interest rates, students might be caught in a trap: On the one hand, students who pursue more education would be more qualified for jobs but subject to long-term debt that stifles their ability to participate in the economy. On the other hand, students who chose not to pursue higher education would not be subject to massive student debt, but they would be much less competitive in the job market. It would seem that lowering interest rates is not only in the students’ best interest, but also in that of the country. : Ellis, Blake. â€Å"Student Loan Default Rates Jump.† Money.CNN.com. http://money.cnn.com/2012/09/28/pf/college/student-loan-defaults/index.html. The German Creation of Colonies in Africa and the British Expansion of Term Paper

The German Creation of Colonies in Africa and the British Expansion of Its Colonial Empire in India and South Asia - Term Paper Example Nevertheless, it was involved in hard campaigns against the countries it was trying to possess. The Chancellor of Germany of that period Otto von Bismarck was not interested in the colonial expansion, but under the influence of German society and leadership that claimed that Germany needed colonies to maintain its economic domination in Europe, he agreed to take this step. After the unification of Germany in 1871 it was obvious that this action should happen because the pressure was too great. The main groups that were lobbying for the colonial expansion were the West German Society for Colonization and Export (1881) and the Central Association for Commercial Geography and the Promotion of German Interests Abroad (1878). Bismarck thought that the future German colonies would be stabilizing power that will influence domestic politics of the country. The colonies were to emphasize nationalism and to raise the prestige and greatness of Germany on the international level. In 1884-1885 Ge rmany was the host of the international Berlin Conference, where European claims in Africa were sanctioned. The requirement was that the claims of possession in Africa must be manifested by the physical occupation of the territories. In 1873 African Society in Germany (Afrikanische Gesellschaft in Deutschland) was organized. The goal of the society was geographical exploration of Africa. In 1882 German Colonial Society (Deutscher Kolonialverein) appeared. More than 15000 supporters of the colonial politics united in this society. In 1887 it joined the Society for German Colonization (Gesellschaft fur Deutsche Kolonisation), which goal was the practical realization of the colonial plans.2 Desiring to strengthen his political position, and counting upon the support of the National Liberal Party at the elections to Reichstag in 1884, Bismarck announced that the German government will take under its guardianship all the international possessions of the German businessmen. Besides that, he thought that this action will weaken the flow of German emigrants to America and will direct this flow to the German colonies. During that period of time the following territories were moved under the protection of the German government: The land purchased by the Bremen businessman Adolf Luderitz at the territory of the modern Namibia. In April 1884 German Southwest Africa was formed here. The lands of Adolph Woermann – German Cameroon in July of 1884. German Togo in July of 1884 German East Africa (Tanzania) that previously belonged to Carl Peters and The Society for German Colonization, in February of 1885. Protectorate of Witu (modern Kenia) that belonged to brothers Denhardt. German New Guinea and Bismarck Archipelago In 1885 Bismarck abandoned the idea of the consistent colonial politics, and concentrated his efforts on the relationship with England and France. Colonies were used only as a bargaining chip in negotiations. At the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 years, A frica was divided among the European powers, and according to Helgoland-Zanzibar agreement of 1890 African protectorate Witu was traded for the strategically important for Germany island of Helgoland in the North Sea. Under Wilhelm II Germany tried to enlarge the sphere of its colonial influence by increasing the number of commercial representatives.

The organization which will use to describe the link between strategic management and leadership is ACCOMMODATION TIMES and it will discuss about the impact of strategic management and leadership on the organization and how they work. Management and leadership Understanding the relationship between strategic management and leadership Leadership involves the quality  to lead whereas the strategic management involves the way the goals of the organisation are achieved. The leadership works towards the achievement and implementation of the strategic goals in a way that it moves ahead in a smooth manner. The strategies are been made by the leadership of the organisation. This involves the management and the way the targets of the organisation are been achieved with the strategies that are been laid down. The link between the strategic management and leadership are remotely related to each other , the way the leadership is working on the achieving the goals that are set is the work of the leadership of the organisation to deal with it. This involves the exact functioning of the organisation. According to Neil Ritson Strategic management is the organised development of the resources of the functional areas which are financial , manufacturing , marketing , technological , manpower etc, in the pursuit of its objective it is the use of all the entity resources, It is a set of policies adopted by senior management, which guides the scope and direction of the entity. It takes into account the environment in which the company operates. (Neil Riston, 2008) LEADERSHIP: In Audrina words a leadership is when you guide the organization into a result that your group has agreed upon. You and the rest of the team have a defined understanding to determine the ability and to articulate visions and goals. Leadership is said seen just as a facet of successful manager. It usually works on precedence for strategic planning and management and long-term success. (Audrina Majella, 2008) Leadership is a skill which a person develop through the experience for example in Accommodation Times general assistant after having experience become the Genaral Manager they never appoint a Genral Manager straight away because leadership you learn through experience and strategic management through courses and trainings. LINK BETWEEN STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP: A leadership is the bridge between strategic management and their target .its because of a leadership that organization gets their desired tasks and targets Management is responsible for people and resources in a unit according to rules or values that have already been set while the leadership set a direction to the people in group. It can understand the link between strategic management and leadership by this example that good leadership and effective management are always the of success in any organization so both of these are the skills which going side by side without management a good leadership can only satisfy for the time being not in a long term same as an effective management is nothing without the good leadership. When great leadership is jointed with effective management, you are able to set a direction and be able to allocate the resources the way you want. Not only that, you will achieve your goal the way you have thought and the way you want to achieve. So it is essential for the strategic decisions to be made perfect in a way that it works out for the organisation as a success. At times if the Leadership of the organisation fails to make a perfect decision in the perfect manner then the strategies are falling apart and the targets of the goals that are been set are not been achieved .So the leadership is the core thing that has to formalise the strategies in such a way that the impact of the decisions that are been made in a success. Leadership helps to bring the entire organisation together for the achieving the targets. Whereas the strategic management helps to put the entire organisation in a single game plan so that they move ahead together in a same direction rather than helter shelter situation. The nature of the leadership involves bringing the perspective to the The 3 stage process of it involves Formulation of strategy Implementation And evaluation Sm achives organisational success My Organisation of findings is Accommodation Times Accommodation Times was started by Mr. Murari Chaturvedi in the early eighties. The strategies which were been laid down during the inception of the Newspaper has been achieved succesfully. The leadership and the strategies laid down have worked efficiently and worked together in tandem. The skills that the leadership has brought about the success Task 2 2.1 Management and leadership theories in the organization Accommodation Times Management Leadership Concepts in the organisation:- In accommodation Times the Management and the leadership is focusing on the continueos expansion of the newspaper through the various means of the channel of the advertisemenst and anlso by improving the better standard of the the news that is imparted to the people or say the reader of the newspaper. The core focus of the management and the leadership is to focus on a time and time again on the spread of the knowhow of the real estate and giving more knowhow to the common man , so that there are more and more number of people that are in the habit of reading of the newspaper . The increase in the base of the readership only gives a brand value but the core finances that are being brought to the Newspaper are through the channel of the advertisements. As the advertisements cover the cost of the printing and even get the maximum profit to the newspaper. So following this strategy the newspaper has a core team which is designed under the leadership of the CEO Mr. Ajay Chaturvedi so that the hurdles are cleared very easily for the team. In this way the team gets a direct support of the higher management for their assistance so that whenever they look out for an answer or a help they get it through the Higher Management in the form of the CEO Mr. Ajay Chaturvedi. The Editorial team is focusing on bringing on those issues to light that are of a unique important to the common man who is reading the newspaper And on the other hand the Editor in chief is focusing on maintaining the dignity and maintaining the values of the organisation , so that never any values are being compromised for the sake of any monetary gains and any of the ethics that the newspaper has been following since the last 3 decades , that should not be compromised that is the main focus of the Editor in chief. In this was the organisation is having its concepts clear to each and every department and that brings about to the very good balance between the work of the Management the leadership theory of the organisation Most common theories used in the organization The three theories that are followed are:- Transformational leadership Transformational leadership is a leadership approach that is defined as leadership that creates valuable and positive change in the organisation. Transformational leadership is a type of  leadership style  that leads to positive changes in those who follow. Transformational leaders are generally energetic, enthusiastic and passionate. Not only are these leaders concerned and involved in the process; they are also focused on helping every member of the group succeed as well. (About .com phycology) In the organisation Accommodation Times the leadership plays a very vital role in the changes that the newspaper adopts and has seen over the last few decades since the the inception of the newspaper. The higher management has a good amount of the influence on the way to the others who are working in the organisation. So we can see such kind of leadership in the organisation Charismatic Leadership The Charismatic Leader gathers followers through dint of personality and charm, rather than any form of external power or authority. Charismatic leadership is leadership based on the leaders ability to communicate and behave in ways that reach followers on a basic, emotional way, to inspire and motivate. We often speak of some sports and political leaders as charismatic (or not) an example being John F. Kennedy. (From Wikipedia) In accommodation Times the leaders or say the higher Management are very charismatic in the way they get or approach to the lower management or even to their clients as well, so when it is looked in that the way the finances re been brought in the form of the advertisement are totally based on the charisma of the higher management and the leaders, if said to be precise. Emotional Intelligence:- Emotional intelligence is the aptitude, volume,  skill. A self-perceived ability to identify, assesses, and controls the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups. Different models have been proposed for the definition of Emotional intelligence and there is disagreement about how the term should be used. Despite these disagreements, which are often highly technical, the ability and trait models (but not the mixed models) enjoy support in the literature and have successful applications (From Wikipedia) The organisation accommodation times also have a very subtle but effective approach on this theory as they have been involved in that true reporting and have been efficiently involved in the spread of the know how about the industry and the standards of the industry that are existing that they give to the common people to read and get aware about.in this way it is very evident that leadership Is following the emotional path or approach very subtle as they never succumb under the pressure of the newspaper advertises. 2.2 Leadership Strategy for sustenance of the Organisational guidelines:- There are very simple but effective approach that the organisation is following and the way it is been handled in the last few decades speaks for itself. The organisation follows the concept of spreading the knowhow to the common man in the city and the country, that what is the real estate and how it is effecting and how it is functioning in the country and the city. The organisational also follows the approach of true reporting and follows the guidelines to implement it so that it is never been compromised over in the functioning of the newspaper. The team works on the guidelines that are been laid down by the Editor in Chief since the inception of the newspaper. Assistance Theory:- The organisation is having a very good and open theory when it comes to approaching the different in the organisation. The CEO even function with the lower level of the management and even the lower level of the management has an environment in which they can approach to the various different departments in the organisation. SO at any time when anyone who is requiring any assistance then they get it directly. This maintains the way of working in a very efficient manner, as there is assistance for each and every one in the organisation whenever it is required and necessary. Team Leader Behaviour Approach in Accommodation Times:- The team leader of the organisation are very efficient and able to lead and represent the team and the industry as well, so there is a sense of relax environment in the organisation that whenever there is a assistance or the way the work is functioning in the organisation. So the way in which the behaviour approach in the organisation goes about to read it is very obvious that the team leaders in the organisation is going about to the way of their work or the guidelines that the various are following.Comapritavely it is very good leading environment in the organisation. Management Role Transactional Theory in Accommodation Times:- The role of the management in the Accommodation times is a very vital role been played in the organisation so that the smooth functioning of the newspaper is being carried on from time to time. The management plays a very vital role in pushing the lower level of the organisation for the work in the office. Also the Management pushes the financial generating in the organisation so that the newspaper is going on the path of success from time to time. Task 3 3.1 current leadership requirements Overview Current leadership requirements in Accommodation Times:- The organisation is focusing on spreading its wings and the subscription on the overseas market so that they can get a very good amount of the overseas advertises as well. As the patronage leadership is and has been focusing on the city and maximum to the country only and this has the middle level management, as the middle level is all set to expand its wings to the international level. The middle or to say the newer generation has a few different guideline that are to be followed in the expansion of the newspaper to the overseas market ,as there has to be certain values and the ethics that has to be compromised. So the editor and the editor in chief are very adamant to follow the change and the expansion with the compromising of the ethics and the values. So the team which is working on the expansion. Generic challenges are the challenges that the organisation is facing in the generic way, to learn this out we have to study the whole way of functioning of the organisation or say various types of challenges that arise. Few examples that can be told are like:- 1) Competition 2). Quality 3). Innovation 4). Retaining competent resources 5). Training 6). Reducing cost 7). System improvement 8). Increase sales, productivity 9). Customer Satisfaction 10).Value addition 11).Adapting changes A Virtual Organisation (VO) is a dynamic pool of distributed resources shared in a trusted way by a dynamic set of users belonging to one or more organizations.   In which major processes are outsourced to partners. Best it can be defined is a company is one whose members are geographically apart, usually working by computer  e-mail  and groupware  while appearing to others to be a single, unified organization with a real physical location. Examples of few of the virtual organisation are Facebook Google Microsoft Wikileaks These are a few of the virtual organisation that are existing in the present times and are very famous as well. This type of organisation has given a very diverse effect in the current global environment. Diversity as a characteristic of the organisation goes further: one is only satisfied when not only the numbers are right, but also when everyones talents, input and assets are used, as a result of which the relevant organisation can serve a wider group of customers and become a stimulating workplace for all employees. Power theories there is a situation of established people and outsiders (as far as this organisation is concerned) the dominant or self-evident will be the norm (this how we do it here) and the minority is often described in negative terms as a deviation from the dominant, so forcing the minority party often to prove that his or her way of working is possibly different but need not necessarily be worse. Cultural differences Differences in culture often manifest themselves in the way in which people deal with instructions, arrangements, conflicts and leadership; all aspects which impact upon how smoothly a multicultural organisation runs. Apart from cultural differences  as such there are dimensions which are connected to a class background, or sex of course, which also impacts upon how people experience the interaction between them. Identity theories Everyone has  different identities:- A sexual identity (man/woman), an ethnic identity (black/ white/immigrant) but also for example a job identity. At which moment is one being addressed in which identity and foremost who determines this. Diverse workforce The reasons for promoting diversity are pretty obvious: to contribute to a fairer society, improve the quality of staff by reaching untapped pools of talent and to increase consumer confidence in a workforce that reflects the clients that it provides services. Some of these differences are relatively unproblematic such as eye colour and hairiness, while others cause us to consider carefully how we treat certain groups. Examples of the latter include education, culture, gender, language, socio-economic backgrounds, religion and sexuality, as well as ethnicity. A useful concept of diversity will therefore incorporate these differences. Ethnicity is certainly one of the most important types of diversity, both because of how closely people identify themselves with their ethnic origin and because of the large disparities in areas such as education and employment between different ethnicities. However, things are moving in the right direction. This is what Accommodation Times has noted down as in the form adjustments for a few employees:- If you have dyslexia and need extra time during assessments. If you use sign language we will make an interpreter available for your interview If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility we can ensure your interview takes place in an accessible room If you have back pain and need to stretch we can provide breaks in an interview. The need for a diverse workforce is part and parcel of the human resource requirements associated with successful continuous quality improvement initiatives. A diverse workforce in which the contributions of each member-faculty, staff, or administrator, are respected and valued is an institutions most important asset. Such a workforce is able to synthesize a variety of perspectives and processes for the successful completion of tasks. Employers can build on established individual and group strengths and develop policies that create an environment to get the best out of each individual. Interim leadership:- Usually an Organisation leader retains the leadership until his or her successor takes over; however, in some situations this is not possible. This may be because the leader passes away or because a leader is forced to resign due to controversy or scandal before a convention can be organized because a leader is forced to recontest his or her leadership or because a new department is incorporated from existing organisations caucuses. Sometimes an outgoing leader decides to resign immediately in order to ensure organisational unity. This is because he or she has accepted an appointment or been elected to another position, or they have lost their seat in a general election and are unable or unwilling to attempt to contest. When a sudden vacancy occurs an interim leader is appointed by the organisations caucus or the chief executive. Changes in reporting and control Changes to the Reporting on Controls at an Organization have evolved over the years for many reasons including: changes in financial reporting to user organizations; changes in the control environments of service organizations; changes in the technology available to the service organizations and the requests of user organizations therein 4.1 Development and leadership skills:- Leadership development is one of those things that are often awfully hard to define but you know when you see it, and you definitely know when its missing.   Indeed Leadership is one of those areas about which a huge amount is said while at the same time leaving big questions hanging in the air unanswered. Essential Skills of Leadership development in the organisations Good Communication: Effective communication is a two-way process sending the right message, that is also being correctly received and understood by the other person/s. Being Articulate: Being articulate can be wonderful until you find out that society uses two languages. A second vocabulary has to do with symbolic meaning and not exact meaning. It is called words for words sake. For those who are never taught this mental illness can bring about a collapse of language as the mind enters the realm of confusion and fear Think On Your Feet:-the people in the organisation need to follow this line of thinking so as to that there is a smooth functioning and a clear understanding of the various views that are and will be raised on time to time basis. Humour: Humour is by far the most significant activity of the human brain.Humor brings insight and tolerance. Irony brings a deeper and less friendly understanding Flexibility. So this has to be understood by the leadership of the organisation so as to be very chirpy as well Integrity: Adherence  to  moral  and  ethical  principles in the organisation means that there is integrity in the organisation. Compelling Presence:-there should be a very effective and a good way of presence of the leadership and the various departments in the organisations, so as to maintain the smooth functioning of the organisation. That can only be achieved by the means of compelling presence 4.2 Report on the usefulness of the methods used to plan the development of leadership skills: Conclusion: Role of strategic management is much bigger than leadership and it can be said that leadership is involved to get the strategic goal defined on the behalf of company owner or share holder. Leadership is developed through the experience and development activities. A smart leader should have the ability to identify the current and future needs of the leadership.
